Catching up with friends over a meal or indulging in some much deserved weekend fun at the bars around Akron is popular amongst students. Many of the popular student hangouts are right around campus or just a short walk Downtown. The south end of Main Street is a pretty popping place for students, especially from Thursday to Sunday. Here are a few places you’ll want to check out near Akron off-campus housing.
The University of Akron Student Recreation and Wellness Service is a great place to start for students who want to get involved in campus recreational and outdoor activities. Students have access to the rec center, which offers an extensive exercise facility, Olympic-sized swimming pool and hot tub, exercise studios, track, several sports courts, and a rock climbing wall. The University also hosts several adventure trips like white water rafting and backpacking that students can partake in! They even offer canoeing and kayaking. Students at Akron like to stay active, and you’ll always see people biking and boarding around town. There are two popular outdoor parks, the Nature Realm and Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, but Akron is home to many other parks where students can enjoy some outdoor fun. The University has an equipment rental center where students can borrow anything from tents to bikes to boats. Grab some gear and have a weekend camping getaway with friends!
Akron is a relatively large city, so there’s always plenty to do both on and off-campus. At the start of the year, the university holds a fun, welcoming event called New Roo Weekend to get everyone ready and pumped up for the upcoming year. Like most college campuses, sports at Akron are big! Cheer along with other zips fans at one of the football, basketball, or soccer games. Students can use your Zip Card to attend several events around campus. Going to dance, musical, and theater performances at EJ Thomas Hall are also popular among students. Additionally, every Thursday night, students can take a break and enjoy a free movie in the theater!
Downtown Akron is just a short walk away from campus, so take a stroll and check out what the city has to offer. Catch a show or play at the Akron Civic Theater. Spend a day at Akron’s Museum of Art. See the animals at the Akron Zoo. Locke 3 is a popular place throughout the year. During the summer you can catch concerts here and in the winter you can rent some skates for only $3 and ice skate. There are also several booths and vendors to check out. Whatever it may be, you can find something to pass the time in Akron!
