For Milwaukee School of Engineering students with the hopes of living off-campus near MSOE, you’ll want to start your search for off-campus housing in the month of February. The number of searches peaks in the months of March and April, so be sure to start looking right away. As the spring semester continues, housing fills up. The sooner you start looking, the less stressed you will be. Don’t spend your summer scrambling to find housing!
Rent prices in Milwaukee can be on the more expensive side, especially Downtown close to the MSOE campus, but if you look into your options you can certainly find something affordable. Living with a few roommates is going to be the most cost-effective and keep some extra change in your pocket. A lot of the housing options in Milwaukee near campus are apartment complexes, which is nice because you have several choices that offer a variety of amenities and sizes. There are houses nearby, but there aren’t as many, so start contacting landlords earlier on if you are interested in renting a house.
Here’s a breakdown of Milwaukee apartments and houses near MSOE average rents per person, per bedroom:
The Milwaukee School of Engineering is located downtown in lively East Town. When it comes time to relax and take a break from classes and late-night studying, MSOE students have a variety of things to do to unwind both on and off-campus. To meet fellow peers with the same interests, consider joining one of the many on-campus clubs. They have everything from archery to softball. Heading off-campus, there are several activities within walking distance, like shopping, dining, theaters, sports complexes, and more!
The MSOE campus is a short walk or bike ride to Lake Michigan. Here, students can enjoy the sands of Bradford Beach, or walk the paved trail along the lakefront. As you continue south down the lakefront you will stumble upon the Milwaukee Art Museum, a city staple not to be missed! For sports lovers, students have teams to watch every season. From Bucks basketball and Admirals hockey during the winter and Brewers baseball during the spring and summer months, you’re covered for great tailgates and discounted tickets for being a student all year long! Speaking of Brewers, there are over 30 breweries located just in Milwaukee alone, which makes sense why it's the beer capital of the world and nicknamed “Brew City”. If you’re looking to take a brewery tour or grab a pint, make sure to check out Lakefront Brewery (also be sure to get their cheese curds) and Milwaukee Brewing Company, both of which are about 10 minutes from campus. Whatever your interests may be, there is something for everyone in Milwaukee!
Highlights include:

Here are a few places you won’t want to miss:
All Milwaukee School of Engineering students are given a free membership to the Kern Center, the University’s health, wellness, fitness, and recreation center. This massive 210,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility is home to both a basketball and ice arena, fitness center, field house, exercise studios, running track, wrestling area, and more! Here, students can also participate in group fitness classes or join a club or intramural sports team from bowling to volleyball.
Juneau Park is a popular place where you can find students tossing a frisbee or football around or soaking up the sun on the lawn with a book. Head to the Milwaukee River or Lake Michigan for a day of boating or kayaking—there are several places where you can rent from. If you prefer to stay dry, stroll down the Milwaukee Riverfront pathway—it’s best viewed at sunset! Visit the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (aka The Domes) and relax while walking through the different parks. Milwaukee has a lot to offer, and there are plenty of adventures waiting to be had right outside your door!
