As the official off-campus housing partner for Ferris State, College Pads is here to give you the tools you need to: find a roommate, post a sublease or room for rent, create a budget, and help find the perfect rental near Ferris State for your next year of studies.
In the past, you had to walk through the streets of Big Rapids and the areas around Ferris State looking for those classic “For Rent” signs, write down landlord phone numbers, and hope you’d find a rental you'd want to sign a lease at. Now we’ve got everything in one place: you’ll find student apartments in Big Rapids, MI on our map page, roommate and sublease finders at the top of the page, and our Ferris State off-campus housing guide.
All of our Ferris State University housing rentals have been verified and approved by our diligent team of campus managers, so you really can’t go wrong — start your search today!
If you’re hoping to secure off-campus housing at Ferris State University, you should start early. Most students begin searching for apartments and houses near Ferris State in mid-October for the following academic year, and the hunt continues through the early part of the first semester. If you want to make the most of your options or live as close to campus as possible, you should have a good idea, if not a lease in place, where you’re going to live before you leave for winter break.
Rent prices in Big Rapids aren’t too steep. If you’re willing to live with a few friends, you won’t struggle to find a room for less than $500 per person, per month. If roommates aren’t your thing and you’d prefer to live on your own, you can most likely find a place for less than $700 per month.
In most college towns across the country, apartments and smaller bedroom options will tend to be pricier than houses with multiple bedrooms, but the difference in price between the off-campus apartments and houses in Big Rapids isn’t too extreme. Prices in Big Rapids seem to be fairly steady across the board, which is great news for students who like to have options.
Big Rapids has all the perks of a smaller city without a lot of the downfalls. It’s not as hectic as some of the larger neighboring cities, but there are still plenty of things to see and do when you’re not busy hitting the books. Many students head to downtown Grand Rapids on nights and weekends for some after-school fun. Here you’ll find a range of dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities perfect for a date or a night out with friends. There’s even a farmers market that takes place from May to October.
To stay involved, there are many activities around campus for students to take part in. Be sure to take part in the Founder’s Day and Homecoming activities at the start of the year, and don’t forget about Ferris Fest! The annual event brings national and local music acts to campus for one of the biggest celebrations each year.
When it’s time to take a break from campus, be sure to take advantage of the surrounding area, as the campus is close to rivers and trails.

If you find yourself in need of a bite to eat off-campus, make sure to check out these Big Rapids favorites.
Situated along the Muskegon River, Big Rapids is home to more than enough outdoor sights and activities for students at Ferris State. The Big Rapids Riverwalk is located in the center of town and has plenty of spots to fish, bike and picnic along the scenic trail. It also has several connections to the White Pine Trail that extends all the way up to Cadillac.
If you’re looking for ways to get involved, the FSU Outdoor Club is a great way to make friends and explore Mother Nature at the same time. The Club participates in a variety of activities as well as a few volunteer projects as well, all focused on the outdoors, of course. If you’re interested, they meet every Tuesday at 11 AM in FSU's Card Wildlife Education Center (first floor of the ASC).
