Debs co-op attracts a variety of students, writers, musicians, artists, and activists who, in diverse ways, are engaged to make our community a better and more interesting place. We are a vegetarian, vegan friendly house that makes an effort to buy organic and local food and household goods from environmentally and socially conscious producers. Debsters contribute five hours of work per week cooking, cleaning, and generally keeping the house a good place to live. Atmosphere: The atmosphere at Debs is both serious and fun loving. The house has a tendency to attract environmentally and socially conscious people, and it occasionally serves as a meeting place for many activist groups on campus. The people at Debs attempt to live in an eco-friendly manner. This style of living can be seen everywhere in the house from the environmentally-friendly cleaning products under the kitchen sink to the compost bin in the backyard to the recycling bins which seem to overflow days before recycling time. However, Debs is just as well known for being creative and cutting loose. The house tries to have a good party about once a month, and everyone is invited.
Debs is located within two blocks of the University of Michigan Campus, fairly close to East Quad residence hall. Currently, we do not allow pets. Smoking is not allowed inside the house, but is okay anywhere on house property outdoors. We also have a nice large porch, a small backyard with garden potential, a bike shed, several parking spaces, a guest room, a TV (no cable), internet, and free laundry machines. We have mandatory house meetings once a month, which usually last between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. Members often look forward to house meetings, as it can be one of the few times all 23 of us are in the same (fairly small) room. Debs always develops into a fairly close-knit community, simply given the physical size of the house. One of our favorite pastimes is dancing on our porch with classic Debs songs or going on brief runs in the rain. People who get the most out of living here are individuals who enjoy interchanging ideas and insights with a variety of people from different backgrounds. Most of all, Debs, with all its students, artists, and activists, is home. (See "Guff Luv" for more info!) Guff Love!: The last paragraph of our house constitution sums up the way many Debsters feel about the house. "The House is a magical community, where all belong, all are loved, and thus it shall ever remain. Such ineffable bonds can only be formed in truly wonderful places, and this House is a place that will eternally stand in the hearts, minds, and lives of its members — past, present, and future. Words will never do it justice." (Kurt Mueller, Debs House President 2013-2014)
